The Challenge

The coronavirus outbreak has led to significant disruptions in the daily routines of children, including school closures and the inability to socialize with friends. Design teams were tasked with using their creative skills to develop design solutions that assist children in coping with the quarantine. This challenge had to be completed within a strict 48-hour timeframe.

Timeline

Competitor research and understand our audience

Children between the ages of 11 to 13 (grades 6 to 8) are experiencing boredom due to being stuck at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. They possess unique characteristics, as they are approaching adolescence and displaying sensitivity, cognition, and self-identity. They seek interactive and enjoyable ways to learn and explore, and have a strong desire to share photos, videos, creative projects, and connect with others in a private and secure community.

We came up with a persona to better represent our primary target user and position our app.

How might we educate and entertain children within a shared and secure online community during the Covid-19 pandemic?

Ideation

The key product concept we tried to include were : Create, share and connect. We used sticky notes to capture our ideas and listed out the needs and motivations the user would have. Then we came up with possible solutions, including games, videos, online chatting with friends, sharing funny content, etc.

We also mapped out the primary features to confirm our product directions and help us with the wireframe process later.

Design with accessibility in mind

Our ultimate goal was to make the platform as user-friendly as possible, so that children could easily explore, connect, and learn in a safe and fun environment. To make it easier for young minds to understand and interact with the platform, we opted for large buttons and simple vocabularies, which reduced cognitive load for children To minimize typing errors and increase result accuracy while searching for content, we also introduced voice interaction on the search bar.
